How the Internet Has Changed Our Approach to Design

Posted in Tips & Trends

As we mentioned in our post last week, Michelle and Paige from Colony Rug are in Las Vegas attending the annual Surfaces trade show as well as our annual convention with the International Design Guild. We just had a full day of meetings and one specifically on social networking with Shawn Henderson, a top designer in NYC, on how the internet has changed the basic approach to design such as:

  • the way we shop
  • vendors used to send hard copies of product images and specs (slow process)
  • designers used to have to physically “shop” the streets and resources
  • Design resources are no longer a mystery for the consumer thus making it more difficult for the designer
  • Speed and efficiency of being able to source products online is a huge change. The younger designer does not leave their desk now. They are reading blogs for their design information and sources. They can track down products anywhere in the world, whereas before, direct contacts with vendors needed to be established first.
  • Young designers read design blogs such as Apartment Therapy, Design Sponge, and Design Milk and use e-commerce sites such as Ebay religiously.
  • the designing process is much faster as well as more competitive, making the consumer more astute.

Colony Rug has adapted to these changes by making the shopping process virtual for both designer and consumer via our website, email, and direct mail. A designer from out-of-state or long distance can contact us with an image, fabric, or idea, and we can pull samples/rugs, email pictures to them first, and follow up with physical product.
