Safavieh’s Ikat Collection

Posted in Tips & Trends

Tribal rugs have become a design staple these days. These rugs have broad appeal because they work in both traditional and contemporary interiors. While the tradition of ikat patterns goes back in history to nomadic tribes, the patterns and lively colors feel very fresh today.

Here is the latest news from Safavieh on their ikat collections:

Safavieh Couture features ikats by designer/architect David Easton, as well as a stunning  new collection of Bergama ikat designs.  The rugs are hand-tufted so they are naturally less expensive than hand-knotted rugs.  For authenticity, they’re made in the Bergama area of Turkey of 100 percent vegetable-dyed wool.  What’s more, we’ve developed a hand tufting process that actually recreates the symmetrical knots of hand-knotted carpets.

The Bergama ikat collection formalizes the ikat trend to layering ikat and soumak rugs in spice market colors for a pattern-on-pattern folkloric look. The collection includes 10 designs, many with borders that feature patterns and colors different from the ground of the rug.  The borders relate to the ground patterns of other rugs in the Bergama line, so that rugs can be coordinated in adjoining rooms.

Colony Rug is proud to carry the full Savavieh line in our Hanover, Massachusetts showroom. If you don’t live in the area – don’t worry! We ship any where within the continental United States.
