How to Choose the Right Sized Dining Room Rug

Posted in Tips & Trends

It’s that time of year again when families and friends get together to celebrate the holidays and your dining room is center stage.  Many customers ask us “What size area rug do I put under my table?”  Here are our guidelines:

  • The size of the rug should complement the dimension of both the table and the room

  • There needs to be ample room for pulling out chairs. Make sure you add an additional 2-3 feet to the overall dimension of the table to ensure that the chairs stay on the rug even when they are pulled out.

  • Other pieces of furniture in the room will determine the size and shape of the rug as well. You need to account for a sideboard, corner cabinet or hutch. Often these pieces will affect the dimension or shape of the rug.

  • Don’t forget the dining table leaf! If your table extends with the addition of a table leaf, don’t forget to factor the larger size of the table into your calculations.

  • Consider traffic patterns. Is the dining room used as a walk way to other rooms? Take those traffic patterns into account when sizing the rug.

Seem confusing? Don’t worry we are here to help. When you purchase a rug or carpet from Colony Rug we will work with you through the measuring and sizing process step by step. You will be confident that you have the right rug for your needs.
