There is a strong trend to creating outdoor entertaining spaces that have as many amenities as indoor living rooms. Furnishings, lighting, accessories and rugs are all being used to create a welcoming outdoor living area.

Here are some great tips for choosing an outdoor area rug from The Huffington Post Styleist Home.

Consider materials.

  • Natural fibers – sisal, hemp, jute, and seagrass all can be used outdoors.  They are best used in covered spaces such as a covered patio or screened porch.
  • Synthetic rugs, – polypropylene or plastic rugs are very popular for outdoor spaces. These rugs are so durable they can actually be cleaned with a hose!

Choose a size and shape.

Outdoor rugs come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Measure the space carefully before you select your rug. Think about what areas of the outdoor room you would like to “define” with the rug. You may choose to anchor a dining or seating area with your different rugs.

Pick a pattern.

The pattern you choose for your outdoor area rug can set the style for the room. Bright colors and stylish patterns are popular now for outdoor rugs. Stripes and bold geometrics are particularly popular these days.

Colony Rug sells a variety of outdoor area rugs including Dash & Albert, Surya and our famous Colony Sisal.
